The Green, Green Grass of Long Island

A Cleaner, Greener, More Sustainable Community, From The Ground Up

Spring is in the air, and, as it turns out, in the soil below.

Birds are singing, tulips are blooming, the buds are bursting on the trees and there's new life being breathed into the grass beneath our feet.

And so we ask you to be kind to Long Island's environment, particularly the aquifers from which we get our drinking water, and into which seeps whatever we may pour down the storm sewers or heap upon our lawns and gardens.

Our good friends at the Long Island Neighborhood Network and the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College remind us that pesticides, herbicides, and inorganic fertilizers are out, while natural, organic feeding and weeding is in.

Go Green, Long Island, and breathe easy while you enjoy the green, green grass of home!

Pesticide Regulation

Legislative Priorities for 2010

The Neighborhood Network is supporting the passage of the following bills in the New York State Legislature.

Local Control of Pesticides - A02662 (Englebright)
This bill would allow local governments to regulate pesticide use and notification more stringently than the State Department of Environmental Conservation

School Grounds Pesticide Ban - A07937/S04983 (Englebright/Foley)
This bill would prohibit almost all use of pesticides on grounds, playgrounds and athletic fields of schools and daycare.

Contact your State Legislators to voice your support of these bills.

To find out who your State Senator and Assembly member are, visit the New York State Board of Elections web site at: http://nymap.elections.state.ny.us/nysboe/
